Ronald McDonald's Charity

RONALD McDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES (RMHC) was established to improve children’s lives through programs that address their need for shelter, education, and happiness. RMHC currently has two flagship programs which focus on different but equally essential aspects of a child’s development: BRIGHT MINDS READ (BMR), a program that aims to teach beginning reading, and BAHAY BULILIT, which strives to build day care centers in areas where they are most needed.
Since its inception, RMHC has raised 30 million pesos, helping more than 2 million children all over the country. It regularly holds fund-raising events (such as golf and badminton tournaments) and participates in World Children’s Day activities, to help raise awareness on the situation of Filipino children. With your support, RMHC will be able to brighten the future of more children as it expands its programs to areas that need the most help and attention.

The Bright Minds Read (BMR) program was launched in response to a Department of Education survey that 4 out of 10 first graders who attend public schools cannot read. The program aims to teach reading, comprehension, and critical thinking skills to students who are mostly first time readers. It creates educational materials specially designed to make beginning reading more fun and much easier. It also provides training for teachers so their lessons are easy to understand and apply.

In 2002, BMR began pilot-testing in 14 public schools in 14 municipalities in NCR, reaching a total of 4,200 pupils. In its initial run, BMR reduced the rate of non-readers from 40% to only 4% at the end of the school year! Since then, 2,200 public schools all over the country are now under the BMR program. Presently working tirelessly with the Department of Education, it aims to bring the program to more children across the region and cover all 37,000 public schools. BMR’s goal is to make EVERY CHILD A READER BY 2013.

While beginning reading is a critical starting point on a journey towards literacy, the ultimate goal of Bright Minds Read to instill in children a genuine love for reading that will stay with them for life.

It is said that children are most receptive to learning during their younger years. With this in mind, RMHC established Bahay Bulilit, where children are offered something others never get: a safe, enriching place where they can test their wings so that someday, their dreams can take flight. Bahay Bulilit is a program implemented in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and local government units. It builds day care centers in depressed areas so that low-income families can avail of the benefits of a typical day care center without the expensive cost.

Bahay Bulilit teaches children from 2 to 5 years old crucial skills to prepare them for formal schooling. Seasoned social workers are on hand to facilitate lessons and group activities where the children learn social interaction, proper behavior, and important values.

Today, there are 19 Bahay Bulilit Day Care Centers nationwide. Driven by its goal of touching the lives of more Filipino children, RMHC is committed to building 100 Bahay Bulilit day care centers all over the country.
